Our Goal

What exactly is technology management for innovation (TMI)? Technology management is narrowly defined as the application of technologies for business purposes as well as corporate management focused on technologies. However, studies of TMI extend far beyond the field of technology management. For instance, in order to build value for the nation or society, these studies may explore grand designs and strategies aimed at combining technology assets used in engineering, consider what technologies are necessary, and discuss desirable ways of enhancing such value.

Let’s imagine the future that is about to be shaped by young leaders like yourself. A few examples of what this future may hold include the following possible developments: advanced AI may spill over into the automation of manufacturing; global warming may be successfully mitigated through the effective application of various energy technologies; people may be able to live more resiliently through the implementation of robust responses to natural disasters, pandemics, and other catastrophes; and many more entrepreneurs with radical engineering ideas may inject more dynamism into the economy. Obviously, it would be difficult to achieve any of these examples solely through technology management in a narrow sense or isolated engineering expertise. Such achievements would require the integration of cross-sectional engineering expertise and knowledge gained from economics, sociology, and other such fields. Only the adoption of a more comprehensive and strategic approach will enable engineering technologies to be translated into social value.

TMI engages in cross-sectional research with the aim of addressing the social challenges presented by today’s globalizing world. The education provided by TMI extends across the fields of studies associated with technology, economy, management, and society. The faculty members who teach or engage in research at TMI represent a diverse range of fields. This makes TMI an ideal environment for learning how to flexibly incorporate knowledge from other disciplines and make decisions that will maximize the overall value to society. Engaging in a laboratory life that allows you to interact with a diverse body of fellow students, including those from abroad, will surely enhance your ability to develop the flexibility and tolerance required for strategizing technology management. Our department seeks to develop leaders with a mastery of engineering technologies and an understanding of management who can take on board panoramic perspectives in addressing various social challenges and creating new value. Our entrepreneurship training program is designed to impart leadership and reasoning skills so that students are able to take the initiative. We encourage aspiring leaders of the future like yourself to join our undertaking.
