About TMI
Our Goal
Head of Department Nariaki Nishino
The recent advancements in generative AI technology have been remarkable, rapidly permeating various industries and beginning to bring significant transformations to our daily lives. In addition to AI, numerous emerging technologies surround us, such as energy-related technologies contributing to carbon neutrality and new product-service systems leveraging information technology. These technologies are being integrated, continuously forming new ecosystems one after another. It can be regarded that our contemporary society is in the midst of a profound global transformation driven by innovation.
Undoubtedly, technology serves as a driving force for economic development and enriches people’s lives. However, even if a technology possesses novel and advanced functionality, it does not necessarily mean that the technology will generate value in society. Technology, by itself, cannot create value—it is only through its proper utilization that value is realized. While traditional engineering research focuses on the pursuit of cutting-edge technology, namely, enhancing functionality, our department places emphasis on how technology is utilized in society. We aim to nurture talent capable of scientifically analyzing the mechanisms by which technology creates social value, objectively understanding them, and putting them into practice.
Furthermore, our department provides extensive educational opportunities in entrepreneurship. In addition to theoretical coursework, students can engage in hands-on, practice-oriented learning. Many students take advantage of this learning to launch startups while still in school, applying their knowledge directly to the real world. One of academia’s key missions is to objectively understand various real-world phenomena by developing generalized theories and models. At the same time, it is equally important to apply them to real-world environments and develop new businesses, utilizing the generalized theories. By making such new business creation a subject of academic research, we can also contribute to the advancement of scholarly studies. We believe that our department serves as a research and educational environment where this cycle can be realized. Thereby, the Department of Technology Management for Innovation can be a platform that enables bridging theory and practice to foster innovation.
We eagerly welcome those who are eager to take on the challenge of education and research in our department and to become leaders in the practice of innovation.
